History

With a mild climate and plentiful water and wildlife, this plateau in the Cuyaca Mountains traces its history to Kumeyaay villages.
In the mid- 1800s it became a stagecoach stop on the San Diego to Arizona route and settlers soon followed. Alpine became the leading honey producer in the nation and continued producing honey until the 1970s.
Beginning in the late 1800s, Alpine became known for its curative climate, attracting people with respiratory problems to area resorts.
