Carlsbad

History

Carlsbad was originally settled by the Luiseño Indians, but the city's roots were established on the 13,331 acres granted to Juan Marón in 1842. In 1883, a retired sea captain discovered an artesian mineral water spring, and Carlsbad became a hub for health seekers and horticulturists.

The city was incorporated in 1952. Tourists and locals flock to the city’s famous Flower Fields, and health-conscious visitors enjoy wellness at the Chopra Center, founded in 1996 by Deepak Chopra. The expansive and fully enclosed Plaza Camino Real (now Shoppes at Carlsbad) opened in 1969, giving the county its sixth major shopping mall.

Carlsbad became home to Legoland California in 1999, bringing the West Coast the Lego Empire State Building we always wanted.
