    Escondido

    History

Before Escondido incorporated in 1888, the area was known as Rincon del Diablo. Neither the San Diego nor the San Luis Rey missions owned the land, so it was claimed to belong to the devil.

It was used for herding cattle and sheep and for growing grapes and citrus. In 1886, The Escondido Land & Town Company acquired it, and the city began to take shape- starting with the 100-room Escondido Hotel.

In 1950, Highway 395 linked San Diego and Escondido. The city turned into a bedroom community. New restaurants, a popular microbrewery and a small, private university are now helping to revitalize the core of Escondido.
