History

Tucked away in the western foothills of the Cuyama Mountains, Lakeside was founded in 1886 when the El Cajon Valley Land Co. purchased 6,600 acres of land around Lindo Lake and developed it with a recreation area and a Victorian -style hotel called the Lakeside Inn.
The hotel's architecture was so similar to another Victorian - style hotel to the west- the world famous Hotel del Coronado- that the Lakeside Inn was often dubbed "The Coronado of the Hills".
Inn 1889, when the new community was connected to the Cuyamaca & Eastern Railroad, it began to grow into a popular destination for the rich, who wanted to escape the city for the country.

Things to do

The number of ranches and horses in the area helped develop Lakeside's reputation as a cowboy town- a moniker that applies even today. The Lakeside Rodeo, an annual affair, traces its roots to the first rodeo in town on July 5, 1920.
It was held in a makeshift arena near Lindo Lake. Today, the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds on Channel Road is a popular destination for rodeo fans.
