History

George Cowles, known as the Raisin King of America, bought 4,000 acres around Santee in 1877, planted grapes and established a community. Had he lived past the age of 51, Santee might still be known as Cowleston.
Three years after he died in 1887, his widow, Jennie, married Milton Santee, a surveyor, real estate agent and councilman from Los Angeles. Jennie requested the name Santee for a post office and soon everything Cowleston was changed to Santee.
After the 1950s, the ranches and farms began to be subdivided into housing developments and the community's population jumped from about 2,000 in 1950 to 25,750
